Black and White Sketches

So recently I have been working black and white for a change. When throwing color on top of everything else, painting a landscape can get quite confusing and lead to a muddy image. So the main purpose behind this  practice is to focus on the value relationships between the background, midground, and foreground. A general rule of thumb for outdoor landscapes is that as things recede off into the distance, the value of objects get lighter and the chroma decreases, or the color desaturates. This rule is also know as "Atmospheric Perspective". Overall, this exercise helped me see thing a lot more simple and also pushed me to keep everything clean.
